Gather: Tablet Based Data Collection.

An innovative, tablet-based data collection tool.

Project Highlights

  • Improves quality of data collected during surveys, by making it possible to assess and compare individual enumerator performance in real-time.
  • Enables survey responses to be monitored in real time.

While there are many open source tools available which assist with survey data collection, none of these enable remotely based managers to observe in real-time how individual enumerators are performing in the field. For example, a manager in the head office may wish to know which houses an enumerator visited in the field and how long they spent at each house. It also wasn't possible to easily compare one enumerator's performance in the field with that of another. These were important gaps in quality control, which led Catalpa to develop Gather.

What we built?

We developed a tablet-based data collection tool and corresponding web application. Data is collected from survey tablets running an open source application called ODK collect. Data is then stored and aggregated by a central server and displayed on a user dashboard. Combined with information from some key indicators, this information gives a sense of the quality of the data that is being collected. It also provides insight into the consistency of an enumerator's performance and enables comparison between enumerators. A chart on the web application depicts the performance of the enumerators over the past week.

How is this making a difference?

Our survey application makes it possible to monitor individual enumerators' performance in the field in real-time. This makes it easy to identify problems with the performance of individual enumerators which assists in ensuring the quality of data being collected.
